Frequently Asked Questions on the Feldenkrais Method®Who can benefit from Feldenkrais? What happens in a Feldenkrais session? What is Awareness Through Movement? What is Functional Integration? What is a Feldenkrais Practitioner? How can I find someone who uses the Feldenkrais Method® Who can benefit from the Feldenkrais Method®?Practically anyone. You can be young or old, physically challenged or fit. It can benefit someone experiencing chronic or acute pain, as well as a healthy person who simply wants to improve their movement. It has been very helpful in easing neurological conditions such as stroke, MS or cerebral palsy. Musicians, actors and artists find it useful to extend their abilities and enhance creativity. Older people use it to keep or regain their ability to move without strain or discomfort. Sports players use it to improve their action (eg, golf, tennis, swimming). Through the Method®, you can learn how to increase your range of motion, improve your flexibility and coordination, and feel rejuvenated. Some examples. What happens in a Feldenkrais session? That depends on the type of session. There are two types of Feldenkrais work: Awareness Through Movement (group lessons) and Functional Integration (individual sessions). What is an Awareness Through Movement® lesson? The lessons on my CDs are typical of a group class called Awareness Through Movement® ('ATM'). The lessons involve thinking, sensing, moving and imagining. They are based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities, such as reaching, standing, sitting, turning round, looking behind you. The emphasis is on learning which movements work better, and noticing the quality of changes in your body. Through increased awareness, you learn to recognise habitual patterns of movement and develop new alternatives, resulting in improved flexibility and coordination. What is a Functional Integration® Lesson? This is a private one-hour session, where you learn by gentle, informative touch from your practitioner, as well as verbally. You would have one of these when you have a specific problem or issue, and need hands-on information from a practitioner who will listen to you and work with you. I recommend the CDs as an excellent support and reinforcement of the work you do with a practitioner in a private session. Guild Inc What is a Feldenkrais Practitioner?A certified Feldenkrais practitioner has completed the required training program ( 800-1000 hours) over a 4 year period in a Guild-accredited training program. Trainees participate in Awareness Through Movement and Functional Integration lessons, lectures, discussions, group process and videos of Dr. Feldenkrais teaching. They learn to teach Awareness Through Movement and Functional Integration under supervision. By acquiring a deep understanding of their own movement, they become astute observers of movement and function in others, and able to teach their clients and students experientially.
